John
Bullock - Design Associate |
|
|
|
|
|
| John
Bullock trained as an electrical engineer in the early 1970s.
The nationalised Electricity Boards had just realised that
the use of electrical energy was as important as its generation
and distribution, and John became one of the first electrical
engineers to be trained primarily in the design of electrical
building services. Johns experience in, and enthusiasm
for, lighting design eventually led him into the world of
luminaire manufacture, and he joined the French lighting
giant, Compagnie des Lampes, achieving the position of Design
and Technical Manager for Lita Display Ltd., now part of
the Philips Lighting stable of companies |

|
| In
1984 John decided to leave the manufacturing industry and
turn to fee-based independent design and consultancy. Two
years later he created Equation Lighting Design, which,
along with its sister company Equation Productions, is now
one of the major UK lighting consultancy and production
practices. As with most ambitions, however, the dream of
running a consultancy business of this stature led to some
disillusionment with the actual day-to-day work. What started
as a hands-on design business, working directly with clients,
became administrative toil as the job became more to do
with business management and less to do with the process
of design creation. |

| Early
in 1997, John decided to break with the company and get
back to the basics of what the job should be about - using
talent and vision to create lighting installations of value
and quality. Acting as an individual consultant, with far
more choice over what jobs John can accept, is the vehicle
which he has chosen to get closer to the dynamics of a project
and to the aspirations of the client. He remains however
an Associate Designer for Dulwich Lighting, working on a
variety of design and project management portfolios. |
