David Lawrence - Director
David joined the Bristol Old Vic Company in 1976. He later joined notable theatre companies to assist on the work of Patrice Chereau at Théâtre National Populaire; Giorgio Strehler’s inaugural production at The Odeon ‘The Tempest’; Peter Stein at the Schaubühne in Berlin and Max Keller, at the Munich Kammerspiele. Subsequent lighting designs took him to Scottish Opera; English National Opera, Théâtre des Champs-Elysée and the Royal Opera in Stockholm. David went onto develop the lighting laboratory and taught over two hundred graduating actors at the renowned Drama Centre London, where he became an Associate Director. As part of the first Western team to record 'Spartacus' for the National Video Corporation from The Bolshoi, David continued to work alongside Chris Bartlett-Judd, on numerous C4 multi-camera commissions.
With a flare for architectural lighting, David was invited to join Equation Lighting Design as an associate in the mid 80’s, where he worked on strategic reports for the National Concert Hall in Dublin; the refurbishment of the BBC Radio Theatre and the lighting of the Waterhouse Way at the Natural History Museum.
Dulwich Lighting was formed out of the realisation that successful lighting designs requires a methological approach, backed up by sound practical experience, both from the electrical as well as the lighting industries. The success can be seen from the first designs of the A380 cabin lighting mock-up, commissioned by Airbus Industrie, to the four year appointment as the Principal Lighting Consultant to Virgin Atlantic. Now David’s time is spent developing the residential portfolio in the environs of Dulwich, where he prefers to stay near to home with his young family.
